I wish to go on a Sports Tour of Texas
Active, athletic and limitless are all great ways to describe ten year old Sam. He never saw his fragile health as a reason to give up sports; just as he didn't allow his Carolina upbringing be deciding factor when determining his favorite sports teams. When Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Central and Western North Carolina asked Sam what they could do to make his dreams come true, he did not hesitate to ask for a "Sports Tour of Texas." Without a doubt, Sam knew he wanted to see his favorite teams, the Texas Longhorns and the San Antonio Spurs, play in the Lonestar State.
As the saying goes, everything is bigger in Texas. Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Central and South Texas teamed up with his local wish granting team to make his dreams larger than life. When Texas heard of this original wish, they went above and beyond Sam's request to attend the sporting events and put him in the center of the action. Sam's expectations were far exceeded when he attended the Alamo Bowl as a guest of honor and performed the centerfield coin toss. Prior to the big game, Longhorns quarterback Colt McCoy took time out of his busy practice schedule to meet the young hero. To complete the wish, Sam and five family members cheered on the Spurs later in the week. The staff at Make-A-Wish knew the trip was a success when Sam described it as the best trip of his life. Sam, his family and Make-A-Wish extend special gratitude to the employee's of the Alamo Bowl and Wells Fargo Bank, who made his time in Texas extra special. |

2008 Queen's Cup Steeplechase
Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central and Western North Carolina partnered with Queen's Cup Steeplechase this weekend to bring Charlotte fun in the sun, horseracing and charitable giving. The event, held in beautiful Mineral Springs, NC, rose over $50,000 for the foundation, which was named this year's race day beneficiary.
Selena Rogers, president of the local chapter commented, "We're very appreciative to Queen's Cup Steeplechase for allowing us to be a part of their 13th annual event. Many of our children's wishes will be granted due to the $50,000 that was raised this year. We look forward to being a part of the 14th annual event on April 25, 2009."
During the presentation of the $50,000 check, Taylor, a 12-year-old wish child from Asheville, NC, found out that she would be having her wish granted to go to the Kentucky Derby. Thanks to the success of the Queen's Cup Steeplechase event, Taylor and her family will be traveling to Louisville, KY to see the famous horse race and to meet her favorite horse and jockey! |
